Locks are indispensable in our daily lives; we use them for cabinets, doors, and more. Market locks are made from various materials, primarily stainless steel, copper, zinc alloy, iron steel, and aluminum. When purchasing locks, choose the material and style based on your needs. This guide will help you select and care for locks, providing a deeper understanding of their use.
I. How to Choose a Lock
With a wide variety of locks available, the choice depends on the application. High-quality, established brands offer detailed product classifications for different needs, such as passage locks, bathroom locks, storage room locks, and main door locks. Opt for well-known brands with a long history; smaller manufacturers often sell directly through agents or shops, lacking the resources and network for reliable after-sales service. Consider your budget and intended use. Different locks are designed for different houses and doors; villas and apartments require higher-quality (and more expensive) locks, while ordinary residences don't need such expensive options. For entrance doors, use stainless steel, copper, or high-quality, thick zinc alloy locks; for interior doors, high-quality zinc alloy offers a balance of aesthetics, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Assess weight, feel, and sound. Similar to choosing a faucet, some manufacturers cut corners, using hollow or low-quality materials in locks that claim to be stainless steel, pure copper, or zinc alloy. These feel light, have a poor tactile quality, and sound dull; good locks are the opposite. Stainless steel is strong, corrosion-resistant, and colorfast. Copper is versatile, has excellent mechanical properties, but is more expensive. High-quality zinc alloy is strong, wear-resistant, highly corrosion-resistant, and easily molded, commonly used in mid-range locks. Common surface treatments include electroplating, spraying, and coloring. These create a protective layer to prevent corrosion and rust, improving aesthetics and durability, offering a clear indication of quality. High-quality locks typically undergo electroplating, resulting in an even, moderate coating, vibrant color, and no bubbles, rust, or oxidation.
II. Lock Usage Precautions
Periodically (every six months or year), or if the key is difficult to insert or remove, add graphite powder (pencil lead) to the keyhole for lubrication. Do not use any liquid lubricants, as oil can gum up springs, preventing the lock from turning. If the door is difficult to close, apply a small amount of pencil lead to the latch. Avoid forcefully impacting the main or safety latch when it's extended, to prevent damage to the latch and door frame.
This guide covered choosing and caring for locks. The key considerations are intended use, materials, and brand. With these tips, you'll confidently select the perfect lock for your needs.
